Waverly

Cimmaron’s Wind River Angel CGC TKI BCAT FITB FTN (CRD CFD) (NA III) CHIC

DOB: February 7, 2021

Waverly is my first Brittany and has been my “try-everything, do-everything” dog. She is biddable, eager to please, and an honest worker. She came from Christine Ward-Weber of Cimmaron Brittanys in Colorado, who bred over 100 show champions, as well as numerous DCs, MACHs, senior and master hunters, and obedience titled dogs. We hope to carry on this legacy of breeding level-headed, versatile, and trainable Brittanys.

In the house, Waverly has an excellent off switch and has adjusted easily between homes with large yards and apartment living.

Waverly has been lightly shown. She has five points in the AKC ring and has taken BOBOH over a special this year, but low entries makes finding majors challenging in our area. We generally prioritize hunting and performance if pressed to choose between them. We would have liked to finish Waverly’s AKC CH prior to breeding, but unfortunately have only had one shot at a major in Wyoming or Colorado since 2022 due to low entries. We hope to be able to send Waverly out with a handler to chase majors elsewhere next summer.

In the field, she has a close to medium range, which she adjusts depending on the cover (generally between 30 yards in the grouse woods out to 250 yards in the open prairie and sage). She passed her NAVHDA Natural ability test with a 102 prize 3 with full scores in every category except pointing, which I expected being that she’d had very little bird contact prior to the test! Our proudest moment were her two perfect water retrieves to hand. Since then we have hunted dusky grouse, ruffed grouse, sage-grouse, chukar, pheasant, sharp-tailed grouse, and ducks. Her first retrieve was a Northern Pintail in a partially iced-over November pond, so you know she loves the water! We are currently working on steadiness to run her NAVHDA Gun Dog Test. Graduate school and life have gotten in the way of some of our field goals, but we’re looking forward to getting back to them.

Her love for retrieving has translated well to performance sports, where her favorite game (and word) is frisbee! Waverly earned her Certified Roller Dog (CRD) and Certified Frisbee Dog (CFD) titles through the K9 Frisbee Toss and Fetch Worldwide League competing at our local club. Unfortunately there are no local UpDog events, so we haven’t been able to pursue AKC disc dog titles yet. Waverly has been a natural at disc and I plan to continue competing with her. We are also currently training for rally and obedience as well as her therapy dog certification. Waverly is mild-mannered and adores children. We sometimes joke that she’s both a good and bad breed ambassador, since she is sometimes so easygoing that she might make the wrong type of home think they should get a Brittany!

Color Genetics

E-locus – Ee

B-locus – bb

A-locus – At At

K-locus – KB Ky

What does this mean?

In American Brittanys, the E-locus controls for orange. An “ee” dog will be orange (orange is recessive) while an “Ee” or “EE” dog will be liver because liver is dominant. The K-locus controls tricolor, which is a masking gene that shows orange markings on the eyebrows, cheeks, under the tail, and inside the legs. A “KB KB” or “KB Ky” dog will not have tri markings, while a “Ky Ky” dog could be tri. However, in order for a dog to appear tri, it must be Ee at the E-locus. Confusing, right? What does it mean in this context?

Waverly got one “e” from her orange sire, and one “E” from her liver dam, so she is liver, but could throw orange or liver puppies. She also inherited a “Ky” from her sire (who has produced a tri puppy so we know he carries tri), but it doesn’t present because it is recessive. This means that depending on the color genetics of a given sire, Waverly could have orange, liver, or tricolored puppies! We do not breed or select for color, as it should be immaterial in Brittanys (absent DQs and mismarks), this is just fun to know because I think color genetics are interesting.
